Litchfield National Park

Just south of Darwin, Litchfield National Park is found. The park contains rain forest, waterfalls, wildlife, camping, hikes and more. We visited over a 3 day 2 night period and took in most of the attractions while there. We enjoyed swimming in the waterfalls the most- most water in AU is not open for swimming (stingers, crocs, etc) so the waterfalls gave us a much needed chance to cool off in the 90-100 degree (F) weather! We visited four waterfalls and each were more spectacular then the next! We camped in our tent at a site near the back of the park that we drove into on 4WD. The campsite was also the starting point to one of the largest waterfalls- which we got up early and hiked to. After hiking into the waterfall in the morning we were glad to see another sign that said the pool at the base of the waterfall was safe for swimming- hot and sticky we jumped in! AFTER taking pictures in the water and messing around Meggan decided to get out.... there was no one around and no one had swam yet that moring in the pool and she was getting leery of the wildlife that could be around. No sooner did Meggan get out--- Sheldon, while still in the water spotted a great big black snake right at his feet! YUCK! We have no way to know whether this snake was poisoness or not (although most are in AU) Sheldon waited the snake out and then got the hell outta there! We hiked back grateful to not be swimming with snakes anymore!
Magnetic termite Mounds.

Despite snakes- the park was beautiful and very enjoyable. We did get to go swimming several times (with and without snakes!) and enjoyed the Magnetic Termite mounds as well- they face North to South to regulate the heat inside.... pretty cool what nature can do!
Our first swimming hole!

Loving the chance to cool down mate!

A view out into the wilderness. So much of AU is yet to be discovered. in such a modern age AU remains a place that you can still discover--- because of adverse weather and so few residents (to the west anyways) Everything we read describes again and again how vast Au is and how much of it has yet to be discovered. This is also what makes travel in AU great-- you feel very excited just to be here. It is wonderful, untamed place!

Another of the falls! The rock wall that surrounds this one is red and wonderful!

At our campsite there were hundreds of these toads hopping about- this picture is dedicated to my sister Abbey... she LOVES toads! There are arts and crafts made locally out of can toads (the largest toad) and I am thinking on which to get her as a gift--- the purse or the coin bag- shoes perhaps!

These are the falls where we swam with a snake!

Although not a magnetic termite  mound, huge just the same!

We hiked clear around this falls and viewed it from all sides! Awesome!

We loved Litchfield National Park! A must see if you visit OZ! :)
